Glyph Book Plans
“We will be changing the discovery spells so they can teach all possible glyphs, and the books will simply provide a no-cooldown method to do the same thing.”
From Ask The Devs #7.
In Public Test Realm news, patch 4.2 will add 3 new trained relic recipes, and a new glyph, Glyph of Unleashed Lightning, which is learned from Northrend Inscription Research.
Cataclysm: Glyph Production
With the PTR pre-patch (and also Cataclysm):
- Each glyph recipe requires 3x ink, so producing glyphs costs (in herbs) at least twice as much as in WotLK.
- Most glyphs (recipe, item, or applied) should convert directly into new Cataclysm glyphs during the next live patch (before Cataclysm).
Goblin investors may spot an opportunity for profit, by creating glyphs before the patch, and selling them after! But be careful: A few named glyphs convert into “Charred Glyphs” – junk items worth only 50s. Details are incomplete and untested, but here is a list of expected conversions.

Inscription Beta 9095
Major changes:
- Ethereal Ink is trainable at skill 290. Scrolls trained at 290 and 295 use Shimmering Ink. The hardest part of the leveling curve should be fixed. Twice.
- Almost all Northrend-only trained glyphs can no longer be trained… Tentatively: These are now discovered using Northrend Inscription Research.
- Many changes to existing glyphs and new glyphs added in-game.
- Off-hands become Bind on Equip – but still require Inscription skill to use.
To avoid confusion, all “pre-WotLK Inscription” changes are listed here until these changes are patched onto live realms. The rest of El’s Inscription will be updated with WotLK-only changes.
Inscription Beta 8926
Latest changes:
- The cooldown on glyphs has gone: Apply them as often as you wish.
- Pigments gained from milling have been altered: Bonus items have gone, and the amount of pigments gained has changed. All pigments can now be milled from herbs again. More details.
- Inks use new icons. No new glyphs or items have been found in the game yet (including Death Knight and Warrior glyphs, and the Inscribers’ off-hand items found in the game files).
- Scroll of Recall now only works until level 50.
