3.1 Fishing Roundup [Updated]
Known changes found in patch 3.1 PTR. Not yet “live”:
- 5 new fishing daily quests in Dalaran. Rare rewards include new poles and minipets. Full details.
- Lake Wintergrasp now contains fish.
- Borean Man O’War gain a cooking recipe (Black Jelly, uses 3 fish, restores 18,000 health and 15,000 mana). Trains at cooking skill 400.
- New +25 Nat’s Lucky Fishing Pole reward for the Artisan fishing quest (or given by Nat if the quest was already completed).
- 5 new fishing bobber designs and 3 new fishing pole designs. At least 2 poles come from the daily quest. More discussion.
Achievement One That Didn’t Get Away can also be completed by catching Mr. Pinchy, Old Crafty or a “Baby Coralshell Turtle” (source unknown). “May be a bug” (Bornakk). “No plans” to buff drop rate (Bornakk).

New Salty Achievement Guides
El has written a complete guide to becoming Salty. Information posted on the forums has also been written into new guides to The Deadliest Catch, The Lurker Above, and One That Didn’t Get Away achievements. Thanks for all the great discussion!
Salty World Firsts
After barely 24 hours of being able to reach Northrend, the first Salty titles have been awarded. Congratulations to Neuport, Butternugs, and everyone else who earns “Salty” so quickly!
Realm First Anglers
It has been confirmed that the first angler to 450 fishing skill on each realm is announced to both factions, and gains a Feat of Strength. Congratulations to everyone that makes it!
Cross-Faction Fishing
Trying to catch Old Crafty or Old Ironjaw in the opposing faction’s capital for an achievement? Read our new guide to Cross-Faction Fishing.
Fish Counts
Tigole was kind enough to clarify the fish catch achievement:
“The way this is currently working on the live realms is that it counts as a fish if it falls under the ‘Trade Good’ category with a ‘Meat’ sub-category. Unfortunately, this leaves out a lot of fish. In patch 3.0.3 anything that is caught via the fishing profession will count towards the criteria. In patch 3.1.0 the wording on the achievement gets changed to ‘Fish up 25 items’ rather than ‘Catch 25 fish’.”
Patch 3.0.2
Expected major fishing changes in the new Patch 3.0.2:
- Many fishing achievements can now be completed.
- Azeroth’s pool names have changed.
Level fishing more than twice as fast– most leveling appears to be unchanged (more detailed confirmation still wanted).
The Fish Finder contains many smaller changes. Please post anything new you find on the forums (or email).
WotLK: Requires Fishing
The latest Wrath of the Lich King beta adds an epic fishing pole, Mastercraft Kalu’ak Fishing Pole (+30 skill bonus), which you can buy from the Kalu’ak (Tuskarr) with exalted reputation. It adds new achievements for Dalaran fishing. But one recent addition is almost unseen: If you cast without enough fishing skill for the water, you will see a message such as “Requires Fishing 430″ (where 430 is the skill required to cast). The old “Your skill is not high enough to fish here” message was one of the reasons El started writing this guide: What skill is required is such an obvious question for any new angler! Now fishing finally gains the same feedback as other gathering professions.
WotLK Round-Up: Cooked Fish and Titles
The first cooking recipes for fish have been added in the latest Wrath of the Lich King beta. Recipes and ingredients for the best buff food require Dalaran Cooking Awards – tokens from new daily cooking quests.
Achievements have been updated, including 2 new titles:
- “Salty” for completing most of the fishing achievements (including winning the Stranglethorn Extravaganza).
“Grand Master Angler” for the realm first angler to reach 450 fishing skill. Update: “Grand Master Angler” will be removed.
