Mists of Pandaria Q&A
From the developer Q&A for the next expansion, Mists of Pandaria:
- Profession skill cap rises to 600.
- Cooking specializations: For example, “grilling may create Strength food.” Choose a specialisation or “learn all.”
- Inscription’s prime glyphs “might go away”, with more major glyphs instead.
4.1 Undercity Daily Quests
The latest test version of patch 4.1 adds fishing and cooking daily quests to the Undercity. Quests start from trainers (Armand Cromwell and Eunice Burch respectively). These give the same rewards as the Orgrimmar dailies. The new dailies are work-in-progress and not yet complete: There is only 1 confirmed fishing quest (Fish Head, which requires a Severed Abomination Head to be caught from the Undercity). No equivalent new Alliance quests have been found yet.
4.0.6 Fishing
Patch 4.0.6 is going live. Highlights:
- Seafood Magnifique Feast ingredients halved: Now viable for 10-raider groups.
- Gikkix’s old cooking recipes are now taught by trainers: Training cooking with fishing 250-275 is much easier again.
- Scalding Murglesnout: Finally a use for Murglesnout!
Azeroth Daily Fishing (and cooking) quests are not currently giving skill-ups(fixed).

For a brief guide scan the Cataclysm FAQ. For more details, see the Cataclysm section. We’re still searching for some of “the fun stuff“, so if you catch anything new, please let us know.
Cataclysm: Cooking
Thanks to Kaliope and Ladik, we now have information about likely new cooked fish dishes and buffs, (even cooking skill). Only the recipes are confirmed – I have guessed which ingredients will be caught. Beta also added a +100 Feathered Lure (which is cooked) and an intriguing Not Yet Implemented Fishing Spear – “Use: Hurls your spear at a fish.” Complete cataclysm information.
3.3 Cooking Skill-Ups Faster
Patch 3.3 (currently being tested) will make it even easier to skill-up after cooking skill 400: Almost all recipes that use Northern Spices will remain yellow (good chance of a skill-up) until skill 450. See Wowhead for a full list of recipes.
3.2 Fishing Changes [Updated]
From the patch notes:
- With 300+ cooking, chance to find a Waterlogged Recipe (image) in the Bag of Fishing Treasures. Can be traded. Starts quest (requires level 70 and 350 cooking). Turn in for 5 Dalaran Cooking Awards and 250 Kirin Tor reputation.
- Blackened Dragonfin only requires 1 fish to cook.
- Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat can be used to lure a pole the moment it is equipped (undocumented).
3.1.2 Northrend Food Changes
With patch 3.1.2, Northrend cooked fish and meat improves, to restore 22,500 health and 19,200 mana over 30 seconds. Black Jelly restores twice as much (45,000 health and 38,400 mana) over 1 minute. Also in 3.1.2:
- New Sea Turtle jump animation (video and images).
- Fishing poles do reasonable damage again.
- Corroded Jewelry from anywhere in Dalaran sewers (even the Circle of Wills).
- Phantom Ghostfish also from Nettlefish School.
3.1 Fishing Finds
Post-patch discoveries, mostly via the forums (thanks for all the contributions so far):
- Ulduar fishing. Fish also caught in Icecrown, Storm Peaks and Zul’Drak. And now Naxxramas.
- Feast are no longer soulbound and can be traded/sold. Fish Feast requires 425 cooking and level 70 to use.
- The 5 Ring, confirmed epic reward from the new fishing dailies.
- Extreme Angler FC-5000 has been reduced to a +20 bonus. DPS on many poles reduced, and level restrictions removed. Stamina bonus removed from Seth’s Pole. Kalu’ak pole change not intended.
- Essence of Fire now caught by fishing (discussion).
- Unusual Scryers Fishing Trainer in Shattrath.
- Phased Orgrimmar fishing removed.
- Dark Herring seems more common.
- Fix: Dalaran Cooking dailies require level 65 again.
- Fix: “Certain fishing nodes [presumably Pool of Blood] for one of the fishing daily quests should no longer be spawned on land.”
Fish Feast and Pool Suckerfish
Patch 3.0.8 (which is still being tested) is known to make 2 important changes:
- The recipe for Fish Feast has been added. Fish Feast gives a +80 Attack Power, +46 Spell Power and +40 Stamina buff. The recipe requires 5 Dalaran Cooking Awards and 450 cooking skill to buy. Fortunately, Gigantic and Small Feasts become “yellow” until skill 450, making it much easier to skill-up cooking to 450.
- About half of all catches from Northrend’s pools have a Pygmy Suckerfish attached: Much more common than existing open water fishing.
