I’m absolutely overjoyed about the new Kalu’ak Fishing Derby! I can’t wait to try my hand at it. And, I know that for many of us fishermen who have had a rough time with the STV contest, this new one is a blessing.

I do have one concern, though, which is about the lag in Dalaran. I know that there are a large number of people who struggle with lag and Dalaran is probably the most laggy place in the entire game right now, because of how busy and populated it is, at any given time. So naturally, having to hearth to Dalaran, deal with loading times, the low fps, and lag that most people have when trying to run around that awesome city, may just work against them.

If the person who catches the shark first has significant lag, they may very well lose their 1st place spot, by the time they get to the NPC in Dalaran.

As elated as I am for this awesome new contest, the lag thing does worry me a bit. And, I hope so much that the devs and designers might take that sort of thing into mind and just entertain other ways in which the winner could be confirmed.

One idea I had, is for each contestant to get a quest item from the NPC on the day of the Derby. A quest item that when used will summon the NPC to your side, like similar quest items already in the game. That way, after someone loots the shark, all they’d have to do is use said item and summon the NPC to their side, then immediately turn in their loot. No hearthing, no loading, no hassle. It pretty much eliminates any real lag concerns. (After the Derby hour is up, the item would disappear from your inventory.)

I posted a suggestion about it on the official PTR forum. Here’s a link to the topic: Kalu’ak Fishing Derby and Lag

If anyone gets a chance and feels similarly, I’d love for you to post a response to the topic on the forums and just sorta keep the thread alive, if possible. I’d love to hear your feedback and any ideas you might have for how to do something like this. Thanks a bunch! :D

Not a big fan of how they did the rewards. I would have liked some new fishing related items. I mean the boots are cool but there are already fishing boots. Some new overalls or pants would be cool. OR A DAMN FISHING CHAIR THAT DOESN’T REQUIRE RL MONEY.

I’ll probably try and win it twice for both of the rewards though.

The ring is awesome, but a little too awesome. It’s going to clog up the competition with a ton of people, making it way harder for the people who just want to do it because they like fishing and want salty.

i’m actually looking pretty forward to it…the more hearth-like equipment in the game, the better imo. :) …makes getting to mid-kalimdor a bit faster.

anyone thought about strats? i’m guessing it’ll take a week or two for non-fishing freaks to get the word out so the population for the first week or two might not be so bad. i’d think the farther from dalaran you get, the less the competition for pools…

maybe sholazar basin since the pools are close together…or off the shores of the kal’uak area, but those are probably going to see more traffic as they’re pretty familiar to the daily do-ers.

i’m thinking clear over in Howling Fjord.

My question is do you need to have get a quest and then go start fishing? I’m assuming no like with Booty Bay but this is continent-wide rather than zone-wide so it may be different. I’m thinking either way west borean tundra or way east howling fjord or in the rivers. Find some pools before its gonna start and fish my little heart out and hearth back. Maybe now I’ll be able to get Salty.

  5. Shalura, 27 October 2009:

    Gogo Gadget Northrend Wormhole Generator!
Although I suppose somebody who didn’t have one could set their hearth to an inn in one of the zones, and use their Kirin Tor ring to zip back to Dalaran to turn it in. If that’s what you have to do.

I don’t understand very well the mechanics ? You can win this contest by being level 1 in fishing? I never understood what thoses + fishing were for ? does this decrease the time required to catch a fish ? Do you need the hightest fishing skill possible to have better chances at this contest if not, then what are thoses +fishing items for ? what are the eternium line shit is for ? fishing hat and all that junk ?

delete this from your database your are stressing the global network for nothing…

If I understood correctly the few post I read, being lvl 1 in fishing or level 1000000 doesn’t change a thing… it doesn’t improve the quality of item fished ? nor the time required to catch them ? nor some sort of hit chance…

Btw good luck winning this on servers with 30k people… not even talking pvp servers where only thoses with the more guildmates that suck your e-peen…

  7. Faulken S Wulf, 7 December 2009:

I don’t get it. Wasn’t the trash half the fun in fishing. Things like the Dalaran coins, cuff-links, and just junk that sold for obscene amounts of gold. What’s the point now? And why would I want any of the +fishing gear, lures, or anything else?

Also, does that mean I can get this ring by just fishing with level 1 fishing?

  8. Sheebah, 8 December 2009:

I’m not seeing this change in the official patch notes today. Did it not make the final patch, or is it one of those ‘hidden’ changes? Anybody know?

  9. el, 8 December 2009:

Sheebah – It was still live last weekend on the PTR. Having just added something like “in open water” to every reference to fishing skill I’ve written, I’m rather keen for the change to now happen… ;-)
