No discovery of a Minor Glyph!!?!

   So this morning I did the discovery of a Minor Glyph and I got a Weapon Vellium (woo....) but then no discovery. I had read that you always discover a new one until there are no more, but it didn't seem to do that for me this morning. I only have 4 minor glyphs so I found it quite annoying not to get another one.
   Any one else run into this?

   I got the same thing last night, only with a scroll of strength or some such. I didn't get a discovery either, that I saw. Could it be that the discovery doesn't show up like it does for alch? Maybe it's still bugged, either in the way it works or in the way it shows a readout for the discovery.

   See this topic; you apparently can't discover glyphs that you can't make, so if you've discovered all the glyphs available at your skill level, you won't find any more until you raise your skill and higher-level glyphs become discoverable.

   Well, seeing as my Inscription skill is 365, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a minor inscription I cannot make (ATM).

   There are a few reports of discoveries not being made, and with 365 skill, you should have 2 months of discoveries to make. Unfortunately, there are so many little glitches in 3.0.2, it is difficult to know if failure is intended. Certainly the vast majority of research is discovering something.

   I doubt it makes a difference, but out of curiosity: were you in a Raid Group when you did the minor research that didn't teach you anything?

   Not in any group. No. It was about 5:30am on a MST server (on Tuesday I think). I was in Undercity. My AddOn's are in the 80%+ working category, but there could be some weirdness there.

   Just an FYI in case anyone wants to keep statistics to look for a trend.

   For fun-and-games, I have a lvl 5, skill 75 Scribe and a lvl 70, skill 365 Scribe. Thus far, my level 5 Scribe has discovered 22 minor glyphs, and attempted to learn the 23rd and final allowable minor glyph, "Bear Cub" but instead made a scroll of recall, and no discovery.

   I was figuring that this toon would only learn glyphs requiring skill lvl 75 or lower, which limits to those glyphs using Midnight Ink - all other 22 glyphs requiring Midnight Ink have been discoverd by this toon.

   This is the first time with either toon I have not made a discovery.

   We think Glyph of the Bear Cub was bugged, and could not be discovered on live realms by any means. I'm hoping that was fixed by patch 3.0.3 - but I have not seen one yet.

   I can verify this. Today I got no discovery out of Minor Inscription Research. I had all of the listed minor glyphs (from: http://www.elsprofessions.com/inscription/minor_research.html ) with the exception of Bear Cub.

   OK, i hoped on the test server (3.0.8) and decided to check minor research. and -YES- i got a new minor. it was a glyph of blast wave. it uses 1 ink of the sea and 1 resilient parchment.

   so this will be very interesting to say the least.

   Interesting, indeed.

   There are a few new glyph spells in the game files (Blast Wave, Thunderstorm, Focus, and Typhoon). If they are all minors it should be possible to discover them all on the test realms with a character that has already discovered every minor available in the live game (which should have happened for anyone making a discovery each day since patch 3.0.2).

10. Thay, January 2009:

    I've got my scribe (who has all live minors) over on the PTR, so far he's discovered Thunderstorm and Blastwave.
    The new minor's so far are all ink of the sea minor's.

    I spoke with a GM last night, you learn new recipies everyday up to a point, then its random chance that you will learn a recipie each day

    if you read the text on the research it states

    "creates a random scroll in an effort to discovery new minor glyph recipies"

    and

    "compiles your experiences from the day, creating an random assortment of inscribed works. you are very likely to discover new major glyph recipies this way"

    these are not guarenteed combines for recipes, it just starts out that way and gets worse one day

    took me a month to get another minor once I stopped getting them once a day, and its been 2 weeks for majors and I know im missing at least 4 recipies.

Minor Reseach List

   Power leveling Inscription showed me that all the trained Glyphs are Major - you have to research the minor ones. So, in the interest of seeing if there are any really rare research glyphs:

   So far I have learned the following Minor glyphs:

   For reference, I've added a list of all known Minor glyph research.

   If the price of minor glyphs is still reasonable on your server, consider rolling an alt, just to learn Inscription up to skill 75, which can then discover minor glyphs.

   Thinking that the real money would be in Minor Glyphs, at least initially, I made sure that I leveled 5 alts that had been sitting around to Lvl 15 + before the patch hit. I got them straight upto level 75 Inscribing and had them all research. I thought I was a bit unlucky with getting two repeat discoveries on the second day - ie two toons with same discovery. I was distraught yesterday (5th round) with 5 of my 6 discoveries being repeats, so I took a look at what they had all learned.

   I had 17 of the 21 discoveries using Midnight Ink, 1 of the 13 using Lions, 1 of the 10 using Celestial and none of the higher Ink Discoveries. I then thought that these higher level ink using discoveries might have a rarer discovery chance.

   CLUNK !

   What if lower level inscribers can only discover lower level glyphs ?!? Sure enough, my max level inscriber had the only two higher ink discoveries. All the 75ish alts had Midnight only discoveries.

   Yesterday I leveled two of the alts to experience level 20 and Expert Inscription. This morning one of them discovered a Lions recipe while the others didn't (not conclusive but validating). It may be that the discovery 'Roll Book' may be determined by ability to make the ink or something other than rank

   Points to make :-

   1) Higher Ink level inscriptions will be rarer as the leveling inscribers will not discover them until later on. AH prices and availability reflect this on my server.

   2) It is worth not using a discovery in the leveling process if you are power leveling. Do it once you hit max if only an hour or two away. You have a chance to make a rarer more valuable discovery.

   Anyone got any points of reference with the higher ink discoveries ? (ie a Jadefire at level 136 inscription etc).

   I hope this isn't a widely known thing and I'm just re-hacking past work.

   Thanks to this site I made 15k gold on the first day (Penguin ftw!) and have 35k gold now 5 days in. Where do I send your commission ?!

   Yeps, that's the case.

   On the PTR my scribe ran minor inscription research when the cooldown was still bugged (presumably on purpose to allow testing) - you could reset the cooldown by zoning (hopping in to or out of Rage Fire Chasm worked great). At one point the research stopped: doing the research no longer taught me new recipes. After I leveled up inscription a few levels more, it started giving recipes again. Conclusion: Minor Inscription Research gives you a random minor glyph recipe that (a) you haven't discovered before and (b) that you can make at your inscription level. Currently you can check wowhead to find out what the minor glyph recipe levels are. (El: consider adding those levels here on this site too, maybe?)

   Lesson: want to discover a particular skill level 80 glyph? Your best chance to discover it is from skill levels 80 to 84. Before 80 you cannot discover it. From 85 onward there are more recipes available for discovery, lowering your chance to get the level 80 one.

   Discovery levels for the minors.

   Midnight/Light at 75
   Lions/Light at 100
   Lions/Common at 125
   Jadefire/Common at 150
   Celestial/Common at 200
   Ethereal/Resilient at 325

   They are all orange/yellow/green for 5 Levels from their discovery point.

   Optimum level for number of discoveries v cost is 150. You will only be out of play on 2 discoveries (Safe Fall and Enduring Victory)

   Agreed. Great insights.

   The only discovery I'm having trouble confirming is Glyph of the Bear Cub. I've added it at skill 75 based on reagents only.

   Glyph of Levitate does not fit the pattern - available at 175, yet uses Jadefire/Common.

   Does anyone have a spreadsheet with all of the researched Minor Glyphs and Major Glyphs currently available in game?

   I tried to copy and paste from El's website to an excel spreadsheet, but it doesn't come out very pretty :)

   Hi Dpartd,

   I tried this with a Google Docs spreadsheet and it seems to work quite well. You just paste the function:

   =ImportHTML("http://www.elsprofessions.com/forums/topic/minor-reseach-list", "table", 1)

   into a cell in the spreadsheet and it creates a "live" area in your spreadsheet that will be updated anytime the table on source page is updated. (The third argument with a value of 1 is an index to which table on the source page you want to link...it's 1-based so a 1 means the first table).

   You can then export an .xls file of this spreadsheet to Excel...the excel spreadsheet won't be "live".

   It would be nice if this table had a column for Class and maybe for the level of the inscription.

How to track known Minor Inscriptions?

   Hello.

   Thanks El for the guide! I skilled Inscription to 350 on patch release day (couldn't get on until 8pm and was 350 by 2am). I only cut it close one place - my very last ink dinged 300 skill, then it was gravy.

   My issue:

   I have now discovered four Minor Glyphs. My problem is that they are just thrown in with the Major Glyphs and I have to manually track them.

   Any suggestions on how to separate or identify or distinguish the Minor Glyphs from the Major in the UI?

   I am having the same problem too. I am going to post this on the Blizzard forums. Maybe if enough of us do this, Blizzard may think about adding a drop down in the Inscription trade skill window that only shows <Class> in in tab and <Major/Minor/Created> in the other. That would help quite a lot for me.

   Good suggestion indeed. Figuring out a full list of which minors I have discovered, or to answer questions like "what minor shaman glyphs can you make?" is quite time consuming right now. And making that second dropdown in the interface actually useful would be welcome.
