Materials 1-75

Train Apprentice Inscription, from any Inscription trainer. You will need to be at least level 5 to do this. Training will cost 1 silver.

Mill 120 herbs (24 millings) that produce Alabaster Pigment. Any from: Earthroot, Peacebloom, or Silverleaf. You should gain at least 62 Alabaster Pigment.

Inscriptions at this skill level use Light Parchment. All parchments can be purchased from Inscription vendors. These are either stood near Inscription trainers, or the trainer is also a vendor. You will need 53 Light Parchment to level from skill 1 to 75.

Milling does not give skill-ups, so it does not matter when you mill herbs. New to milling? Read about how to mill herbs »

The first 35 skill points teach you a method that is used a lot in this guide: First make all the ink you need, then use it. We do this because inks "go grey" faster than other recipes. So we make the ink while there is a chance to gain a skill-up.

From skill 18, you have a choice: Each of the 3 scrolls listed use the same materials, and have the same skill-up chance. You just need to make 17 scrolls in total. These low-level scrolls are not commonly used, so you will probably just sell them to a nearby vendor. So it does not matter which scroll you make. Later in the guide you will be offered choices, and sometimes one of the choices is more valuable: Perhaps it will sell for more money, or you can use it yourself.

Alabaster Pigment is needed to make both Ivory Ink and Moonglow Ink: Do not use all your pigment on Ivory Ink!

The first recipes you learnt were automatically trained with Apprentice Inscription. For other recipes, you will need to visit an Inscription trainer and pay for training. The "min" value in the tables shows the minimum skill needed to train. Early recipes can be trained from any inscription trainer. At higher skill levels, you will need to train in Outland or Northrend.

Skill 35 adds a new ink, which uses twice as much Alabaster Pigment as Ivory Ink. Use the Alabaster Pigment you milled at skill 1. Our method is the same: Make the ink, then use it.

Planning for research? Minor Inscription Research (described in the next section) uses Moonglow Ink. Over the next few months, you will try and discover minor glyphs. That research will use at least 60 Moonglow Ink. You may wish to make those Moonglow Inks now, while you gain skill from making them.

Scroll of Recall act like an extra single-use hearthstone. Unfortunately, above level 40 they tend to fail, and teleport you to the wrong place! Read more about Scroll of Recall.

Each Armor Vellum is used by an enchanter to write down an enchant. That creates a new scroll. The scroll can be traded or mailed. Basic Armor Vellum can only be used for enchants without a minimum level (almost every enchant that existed before The Burning Crusade). Vendors will not buy vellum. Learn more about Vellum.

Between skill 50 and 75, train Journeyman rank from any Inscription trainer. You will need to be at least level 10 to do this. Training will cost 10 silver.
