[Inscription] Milling Data

  1. vchan000 <Member>, 1 year ago:

Here's a listing of my milling data so far, including the new changes on the patch as of 8/30 (reused alabaster numbers from previous post in herb amounts)

230 herbs (Peacebloom, Silverleaf, Earthroot, Mageroyal)
    114 Alabaster Pigment

80 herbs (Briarthorn, Swiftthistle, Bruiseweed, Stranglekelp)
    52 Dusky Pigment
    14 Verdant Pigment

95 herbs (Steelbloom, Kingsblood, Grave Moss, Liferoot)
    52 Golden Pigment
    11 Burnt Pigment

115 herbs (Fadeleaf, Goldthorn, Khadgar's Whisker, Wintersbite)
    58 Emerald Pigment
    13 Indigo Pigment

135 herbs (Firebloom, Purple Lotus, Arthas' Tears, Sungrass, Blindweed, Ghost Mushroom, Gromsblood)
    70 Violet Pigment
    11 Ruby Pigment

55 herbs (Dreamfoil, Golden Sansam, Mountain Silversage, Plaguebloom)
    28 Silvery Pigment
    6 Sapphire Pigment

No data yet on whats used as ingredients for which beyond some inks, most of the glyphs added had obviously bugged/not yet implemented ingredients

For clarification sake, I assume that when you mill certain herbs, there's a chance you get another usable pigment byproduct with the base pigment? (Like occasionally obtaining burnt pigment while you typically get golden pigment while milling steelbloom). I'm curious if say the chance of obtaining Burnt pigment is higher while milling liferoot versus steelbloom, as well is, how dependent are you (recipe wise) in having those off shoot pigments?

    Amazing information!

  3. vchan000 <Member>, 1 year ago:

no discernable difference in which herbs mill to the extra pigments,

Each milling produced 2-4 of the regular herb (4 was VERY rare) and 0-1 of the special herb.

I admit, i don't have a huge range of sample data here, but its part of why I posted it, I'm hoping other inscriptionists will post their numbers, and/or these will come in useful for El when determining actual chance for each.

I've got one more character with inscription that I wont be levelling her skill until they update the recipes, and one more copy available to the beta server which I'm saving until hopefully everything is updated and I can do a full run at (close to) live data for information.

As for recipe dependence on the special pigments, most glyphs had simple placeholder mats listed, so I can't really comment on that until a bit later.

Thanks vchan000. I gathered a lot of data earlier, but have been hoping to get back into the game to fill in some gaps. One of those blanks was the single pigment from the first tier of herbs: I thought I might just have been unlucky, and not got a secondary pigment. But I think your 46 millings are fairly conclusive.

I also picked up another quirk. The most common Pigment (what I call the primary pigment - the one you always get from the milling) averaged 2.5 across everything, with a range from 2 to 3. Except for Dusky Pigment, which averaged 3.5, with a range from 3 to 4. I only have a sample of about 15 millings for those lower level pigments, so it is possible I got (un)lucky.

There was also another curiosity with Sapphire Pigment and Ebon Pigment (the 225 and 275 milling sets respectively), which rarely appeared in 0, 1, or 2 (instead of the 0 or 1 found for other secondary pigments).

Here are my results from various milling.

    Out of 285 herbs:
    140 Alabaster Pigment

    Out of 200 herbs:
140 Dusky Pigment and 21 Verdant Pigments

    Out of 200 herbs:
    104 Golden Pigment
    28 Burnt Pigment

    Out of 200 herbs:
    99 Emerald Pigment
    23 Indigo Pigment

    Out of 200 herbs:
    100 Violet Pigments
    20 Ruby Pigments

    Out of 200 herbs:
    104 Silvery Pigment
    23 Sapphire Pigment

    Out of 200 herbs:
    101 Nether Pigment
    20 Ebon Pigment

Also, Shimmering Ink is bugged. It is grey when you get it but will skill you up fast from 275-300.

  6. who <Member>, 1 year ago:

So, can any beta testers estimate how many herbs in each milling "level" are needed to get to the next level? Is it also true that milling different types of herbs in the same level doesn't affect the amount/type of ink (like mageroyal vs peacebloom)?

    Thank you!

  7. vchan000 <Member>, 1 year ago:

mageroyal and peacebloom both mill for the same amount of pigments

There isn't really an easy answer to your question on the number of herbs needed to reach the next milling level. Milling itself does not give you any points in inscription, but there's approximately 50 points between each milling level.

    The number of herbs needed is affected by several factors;
How lucky you are on milling, (here it seems the numbers have changed that you get slightly better than half the total number of herbs milled in pigments)

How many inscription points you make in simply creating the inks needed for your glyphs

How many glyphs you need to make to complete the 50 points till the next ink you can create. (which will use the next type of pigment produced, about 25 points above the next milling level.)

As many of the recipes currently are using place holder mats and we don't know how many inks will be needed for each glyph, any guess we give you is just a shot in the dark at this point

On that note, I'm saving 100 of every herb for when the expansion goes live and figure I'll have an acceptable amount of leftovers when I'm done.

  8. BaneGrievver <Member>, 1 year ago:

My guess would be 200 herbs for each "herb group" is a safe minimum.

Even besides all the placeholder mats, there's still a fair bit of tweaking to be done. For example, from 70-75, there is only one recipe to level on, Scroll of Recall, which is green to you.

  9. windshield <Member>, 1 year ago:

I leveled Inscription on the PTR in the last couple days. Since I milled so many herbs, I'm pretty sure this is definitive.

    2-3
    Nether
    Silvery

    2-4
    Violet
    Emerald
    Golden
    Dusky
    Alabaster

  10. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

I last had a 4 Silvery Pigment milling on 1st October, and 4 Nether a few days before. The numbers found here have all been gathered since 20th September, which was the last time milling obviously changed. That shows any primary pigment can appear in 2, 3, or 4. 4 pigments are just very unusual - you can have tens of millings without seeing one.

The overall average for primary pigments comes out at 2.7 - however I rearrange the data. I suspect any secondary pigment can also appear in large volumes (2 and 3, not just 1 or nothing), but the chance is very low indeed. I'd be interested to know what your raw average and sample was.

  11. windshield <Member>, 1 year ago:

My sample size was, well, far more than what's needed to get to 365. I was way overstocked on both the Silvery and Nether herbs, and I milled extra out of curiosity. I never got a 4.

And then, just now, I go back to the PTR to mill some Nether herbs, and I'm getting 4s like crazy. Seriously.

I normally wouldn't say this, and I don't even want to believe it, but I think herb level might make a difference. When I was leveling before, I used Felweed and Ragveil almost exclusively. When I went back to the PTR just now, what I had left to mill was high level herbs like Mana Thistle. Make of that what you will, I guess.

  12. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

Interesting. Looking through my data, I've had 4 pigments from these herbs: Stranglekelp, Khadgar's Whisker, Kingsblood, Liferoot, Plaguebloom, Blindweed, Mountain Silversage, Adder's Tongue, Lichbloom, Icecap, Bruiseweed, Ancient Lichen, Gromsblood, Earthroot.

So, Earthroot is the rarest in the skill-1 set. And 4 pigments from Felweed have never shown up in the 275-skill bracket, yet Ancient Lichen is rare. But then Kingsblood is probably the easiest in the 75-skill group, and Khadgar's Whisker is common in the group above.

So I'm inclined to conclude there is no pattern: It's just random. But it could still be irrational: There is a pattern, but it does not account for how rare the herbs are. Of course, since we cannot tell the difference over hundreds of millings, it should not concern anyone stockpiling herbs.

  13. windshield <Member>, 1 year ago:

Okay, so I'm not alone on the Felweed/Ragveil thing. If anyone ever gets 4 from them, please let us know.

In any case, it's probably cheaper to get 2-3 from Felweed/Ragveil than 2-4 from something like Mana Thistle.

  14. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

Kaliope got me thinking. I suspect I've cracked the basic pattern of why some herbs appear to produce slightly more pigment than others. But I do not have sufficient data to understand the detail.

I believe the explanation lies in the item level of the herbs (herb item level can only be displayed using a mod). I'm working towards a theory that says something like:

    Primary pigment chance = 2.5+f
    Secondary pigment chance = 0.2+f

    Where f = ( itemLevel - baseLevel ) / 25

Expected values of f would be between 0 to 0.4. I'm not sure what the baseLevel figure is. Each set roughly groups over 10 item levels, so the base may be the bottom of the 10 set, of may be the value of the lowest herb in the set, or something else quite similar based around the range.

I really need lots of data, spread across all herb types - both to improve the factors, and to confirm the pattern.

If correct, this would not make much difference to the primary pigment, but would alter the secondary pigment chance quite a bit.

Hey El ~ just in case the big patch makes it's debut tomorrow I put a post up asking my readers to share their info here if they're interested in helping out. I will also make notes and post them for you when I level up on Live tomorrow (or whenever, heh).

Just curious, do you want data from the beta server? I'm planning to level up there as soon as it looks like they've got the progression ironed out in the 350-450 range. But I wasn't sure if you were primarily interested in Live drop rates or if you want beta information as well. I wouldn't want to taint your data pool :)

  16. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

    Thanks Kaliope.

I'll take any recent data (last 2-3 weeks) from any source. Just add a note about where the data is from. I do not think there will be differences, but if there are, we will need to know.

Data can also be mailed to el at elsanglin.com.

    (Kaliope's post is here)

Is anyone aware of an addon to help gather the results of milling? I know that the wow 3 version of enchantrix (included in the preview build of auctioneer that was posted last weekend) 'sees' and summarizes milling results, but it seems the tooltips shown for herbs as modified by enchantrix uses (incorrect) hard-coded values rather than your own milling results.

    Hi All,

From the Live realms, after 3.0.2 patch (Mostly US-Aman'Thul, but also US-Dath'Remar)

Each line shows the number of results for the herb in summary, in the form of: Primary pigments, 2, 3, and 4 secondary pigments, 1, 2

eg for Stanglekelp, out of 6 millings, I got 2 primary pigments twice, 3 primary pigments twice, and 4 primary pigments twice. I got 1 secondary pigment three times and 2 secondary pigments once,

    Peacebloom 23 16 0 0 0
    Silverleaf 13 17 0 0 0
    Earthroot 5 0 0 0 0
    Stranglekelp 2 2 2 3 1
    Mageroyal 5 4 0 1 0
    Liferoot 11 5 9 15 0
    Kingsblood 6 5 4 10 0
    Khadgars Whisker 0 17 11 12 2
    Goldthorn 3 3 0 3 0
    Firebloom 2 4 0 2 0
    Purple Lotus 6 7 0 2 0
    Sungrass 6 9 0 3 1
    Arthas Tears 0 1 0 0 0
    Dreamfoil 9 11 0 4 0
    Plaguebloom 6 3 3 5 0
    Felweed 22 18 0 7 1
    Mana Thistle 3 2 2 3 0
    Ragveil 3 2 0 2 0
    Ancient Lichen 1 1 2 4 0
    Netherbloom 3 0 4 1 0
