Absolutely agree, first time reaching L80 in this game (just started playing last summer).
Chose inscription and herbalism. Reached 430 inscription skill and find this is worthless.
Many inscription players scribe and most all L80 glyphs, major and minor sell for less than 10gp.

I can make more gold on a stack of all the northrend herbs and more on the mid-range herbs rather than buy the parchment, break down the herbs, mill, make the ink, make the glyph or vellum... whew.. lot of work for nothing.

Not worth the time spent and money lost for the shoulder enchant when these attributes can be made up in other ways.

I'm so fustrated with this profession and expected way more out of it. 15gp for Weapon and Armor Vellum III ! commonn...

Going over to mining then JC. Enchant, JC, Tailoring always in demand...

Basically the only reason I got inscription is for the shoulder enchant. Would be nice if we had a BoA for them.
All my toons get the glyphs free so that is a bonus to me.
I have sold very few. I may take a look and see what is selling for a good price and make up a few and put them on the AH.
Darkmoon card sets are a laugh, you have to make so many, as they are random you never get what you need and multipuls of others. To make 2 decks I made like almost 80 cards and I still had to buy one fill in. Would be a nice advantage that after like 15 cards or so the game would check and give you a card you needed to complete a deck.
Fortutude scroll is nice but they seem not to sell very well on my server.

There are a couple of glyphs on my server that consistently go for below cost, either because they are good for leveling, they aren't any use to anyone (Glyph of Raptor Strike), or both.

Otherwise, I continue to make revenues of about 1000g a day on costs of about 100g a day. For a long time I was making only 300g a day because two other scribes spent several weeks in a fierce undercutting battle.

Cartels always seem like a good idea until, 3 days in, somebody turns around, backstabs everyone else, and starts undercutting just enough to rake in a windfall for a couple of days.

Herbs on my server average 20g-60g a stack, but I never pay over 8g. I bargain shop and I buy in bulk. I know when the best times are to buy herbs on my server, and I stay on the lookout for farmers dropping large quantities of, say, Icethorn, on the AH.

Go back and check again -- I doubt that every single glyph is selling for 70s (or whatever "below cost" is). I recommend downloading Quick Auctions 3 and learning to use the "Summary" button -- find 10 or 20 glyphs that are selling above cost, verify on talentchic.com that they are in use by the general population, make one of each, and then list them up mid-evening. You should be able to make a sale.

I chose inscription mainly because i like the idea of writing and making stuff. However ive found that it really doesn't make you a very good living.

My thoughts for the reason is that fellow inscribers particularly on my server think that they must sell there wares at below cost. By below cost i mean the cost of obtaining mats at AH prices and paper at friendly rep.

We are all the first to complain that inscription is now a dead profession but the way i see it if we all facted in a realistic cost price and added your proffit magin of say 30% as just a figure then we might all start to benifit again.

The other reason i have joined this forum is i thought it would be a good was to form a inscription cartell lol.

Well the way i see it if we all posted the going rate of AH mats at our various AH then we could all work out the cost price and work out a recommended sale price as a starting point.

Then if fellow inscribers wanted to add more proffit to the item it would be a matter for them and allow a little compertion. Just my thoughts. Kind regards

The main personal advantage is in the Master's Inscriptions. I don't know the class well enough to comment on all the options.

If you take a profession for the non-personal benefits, class does not make a difference.

Nobody is immune from sudden job loss anymore, and everyone should be prepared for the possibility. If your finances are in order, you'll be better able to avoid being plunged into unmanageable debt caused by job loss and will be less likely to accept a job you'll end up hating. You can be prepared without being paranoid.

Inscription and herbalism obviously go well together - otherwise you have to buy all your inscription materials. And herbalism can provide a reasonable income. In terms of person advantages, skinning gives a small +crit bonus, vs an instant heal from herbalism, so skinning is probably more useful to a mage.

Hi
I have not really paid attention to my professions (lvl 70 Alliance mage) but I do have fully skilled Skinning, Apart from farming Cobra scales which sometimes sell for 25g sometimes don't sell at all, this seemed more useful when I was lower level 'cos you skinned what you had killed.

My other skill was Enchantment which was still so low level I've barely started it. This has now been replaced by Inscription which I'm really enjoying starting to level up.

Should I drop Skinning as well and take up herbalism, thus providing me with Potions AND the ingredients for Inscription?

Thanks,
MrP.

That's interesting. The TBC-only condition was announced by Blizzard a few months ago, but not something I can personally check. Logically you should be able to train up to 300. If you level it further (beyond 105), please let us know how far you can get without the expansion.

Hello

I just wanted to comment on the Inscription requirements, it says that the Burning Crusade Expansion is needed to learn the profession. This don't seem to be correct; I haven't bought it yet, and cannot for example take the boat to Exodar, but I have learned Inscription, and levelled it up to 105 so far.

There are also some Inscriber-only off-hand items lurking, although only one (Mystic Tome) is currently available in the beta.

Blizzard have just announced that mount speed enchants are to have no effect after level 70, so the rumoured mount speed bonus is looking increasingly unlikely.

Bottom line is that we really don't know what advantage Inscribers will have yet. The only examples of Inscriber-only items in the beta are all very low level, or not available in the game yet.

More to come like assumed higher quality decks and decyphering witch is currently unknown what it does atm..
